“The Great Wave off Kanagawa” or “The Wave” by Katsushika Hokusai.
This painting entitled “The Great Wave off Kanagawa” is undoubtedly one of the most popular Japanese works of recent decades. Created during the Edo period in 1831 by the painter Katsushika Hokusai, this work is part of the “Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji” series. It is part of the artistic movement of ukiyo-e of which Hokusai was a great master.
By analyzing the composition of this table, we quickly distinguish 3 main elements:
Mount Fuji which is a powerful place of meditation and very popular with Buddhist religions. He is placed very far away here, which gives him a feeling of inferiority in the face of the immensity of “The Great Wave of Kanagawa”.
The wave which is the key object of the painting. From its height of 10 to 15 meters and its foam in the shape of hooked fingers, the monstrosity of this wave can be compared with rogue waves. These sea monsters caused such damage to ships that the stories of the few survivors were considered legends until the end of the 19th century.
The boats as well as the people on board for whom the situation seems lost in advance in the face of a giant wave which will fall on them. However, we note that these are oshiokuri-bune, small fast boats which were intended to deliver fish to the markets of Edo Bay.
The Japanese text present at the top left of the canvas is the signature of the author " Hokusai Itsu ", and the name of the painting, in frame, "36 views of Mount Fuji - Off Kanagawa - Under the wave ".
ATTENTION : The frame is not provided with the canvas, so we leave 4 to 5 centimeters of margin on each edge in order to be able to add a frame or reinforcement.
- Matter : This reproduction is a high definition waterproof canvas print made of cotton and polyester. This texture and thickness of this paper are particularly appropriate for the reproduction of paintings of this type and therefore ensures great fidelity to the original work.
- Artistic current : This painting is part of ukiyo-e, an artistic movement from the Edo period (1603-1868) which could be translated as “image of the floating world”.
- Style : Japanese landscape
- Colors: The main color to remember from this painting is, as with all the works of “Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji”, Prussian blue.
- Year of production (original): 1831
- Painter (original): Katsushika Hokusai
